What effect does CBD have on the skin and body?
CBD, known as Cannabidiol, is a powerful compound that comes from the cannabis plant. For centuries, there have been countless documented uses of the plant for its various medicinal and therapeutic benefits.
Over the years CBD has increased in popularity and can be found in makeup, skincare and a variety of essential oils sold in high street stores.
With more and more people being able to access CBD not many are aware of the research that has taken place surrounding the compound and the positive effects that have been found.
In this blog post, we will explore these positive effects of CBD on the skin and body and how you can incorporate it into your daily skincare routine but first we need to explain a bit about the science!
Way back in the early 80’s
The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) was discovered which is a biological system in the body that helps regulate and balance key bodily functions.
We are still trying to fully understand the ECS but so far, we know it plays role in regulating a range of functions and processes, including:
- sleep
- mood
- appetite
- memory
- reproduction and fertility
The ECS exists and is active in your body even if you don’t use hemp / cannabis.
If your ECS is deficient in cannabinoids we are not balanced and unable to regulate our bodily systems effectively.
We know that cannabinoids are key to the ECS and supplementing with oral CBD oil via drops or spray helps regulate our internal bodily systems, so how does it effect and benefit our skin ?
Anti-ageing
The beneficial antioxidant properties of the hemp plant help combat the visible signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles.
What are antioxidants? Antioxidants protect the skin from free radicals, unstable atoms released by environmental stressors (UV rays and pollution) that damage the structural parts of the skin and speed up the visible signs of skin ageing that cause fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots.
By neutralising free radicals before they can do any damage, antioxidants help the skin stay youthful longer.
Acne and Blemish Prone Skin
Scientific studies have reported the positive effects of CBD on the human sebaceous gland and concluded that CBD inhibited oil production and had a anti-inflammatory impact on oil-producing glands; ideal for acne sufferers, people prone to blemishes or with skin conditions that cause the skin to become inflamed.
Note: It is important to know that CBD is not the same thing as hemp seed oil, which is another great ingredient for the skin. The two are often marketed interchangeably, but whole-plant hemp extract is richly concentrated in CBD and other cannabinoids, whereas hemp seed oil only contains trace amounts of CBD, if any.
We have a range of skincare products that you can incorporate into your daily skincare routine that not only includes CBD but other anti ageing skincare properties such as marine collagen, retinol, hyaluronic acid and many more high quality ingredients.
